How to check your property for a suspected water leak…

There might be a time that our office will contact you, saying that there is a suspected water leak at the property and asking you to do some things for us, to check if this is the case and if we need to arrange a plumber to attend to rectify the issue.

The issue has generally been identified from the data received from your smart water meter.  The smart water meter will directly report to the Council if there has not been a period of zero usage for one hour, within a 48 hour period.

How we want you to check for a leak

The water meter is a good place to start to perform a basic leak test.

1 – Turn off all taps – make sure all taps and water using appliances are turned off

2 – Find your water meter – it will usually be located in the front or rear of your property, if you have a back lane it can also be located there.  If you cannot find your meter, please contact Lithgow Council to help you find it.

3 – Record the numbers – open the lid and take a photo of the meter reading.

4 – Wait 30 minutes and do not use any water at all in this time.

5 – Take another photo of the meter numbers.  If there is a leak, the numbers will have increased.

6 – Send the photo of the meter reads to our office if you suspect a leak OR send our office an email/text letting us know that there was no change in the readings.  If you have an idea of what might be causing the leak, please make sure to let our office know this as well when you send in the email/text.

We really do appreciate your assistance in helping us determine if a suspected leak is present at the property. From this point, our office will speak with your landlord and arrange a tradesperson to attend to the issue.
